Hire a Boston teen!

This week marked the launch of the Mayor’s 2012 Summer Jobs Program giving local teens work experience with local companies!

Last year, a dozen ID companies hired at least one Boston teen (special thanks to John Hancock for being so generous), and we want your help in making this summer bigger and better!

Just yesterday, Gemvara signed on to hire local high school students, and you can, too.

Register at bostonsummerjobs.org, and share the news (#sjbos).

Once you’ve signed up, @mayortommenino will tweet and post on Facebook to more than 17,000 followers and friends that you’re helping the cause.

Boston offers the most summer jobs per capita of any major city in America, yet just 14% of companies that have more than 100 employees offer a summer job.

This allows students to work on their resumes and interviewing skills in preparation for when businesses who have signed up to hire youth hold interviews.

We’ve got a spring in our step!

How ’bout that event that led to the American Revolution AND took place in our beloved Channel!

Are you ready for the Tea Party?  The original Tea Party?

The newest (yet oldest) addition to Fort Point Channel is the museum commemorating the event that sparked the American Revolution- the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum.  The original ships first arrived in 1773 in Griffin’s Wharf (now Congress and Purchase Streets…but these days the Channel is as close as you can get).  The second version came in 1973 (but went up in lightning flames in 2001) to return bigger and better than ever in 2012!

We’re pretty sure this is the only floating museum with an elevator in the world, and if that isn’t cool enough, the Museum offers “the 17th century meeting the 21st century.”  You’ll enjoy a theatre, life-like experience of the events surrounding the Tea Party.  One of the tea chests from 1773 (239 years old) will be back in the Museum.  Speaking of tea, tea sommelier, Bruce Richardson, will be Tea Master of the Museum’s Tea Room.  (We hope he’ll be offering classes, too.)

Mini version of the Beaver, Dartmouth, and EleanorThe story is incredible, a true engineering feat.  Check out the website to see the official countdown to the opening, the live webcams of construction in Boston and in Gloucester, and stay tuned for when the ships navigate the Channel to dock at the Museum.

Thanks to Friends of Fort Point Channel for sponsoring the presentation, Dan Perruzzi from Margulies Perruzzi Architects, and Shawn Ford of the Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum.  It’s over a decade in the making, and we’re so excited for the homecoming.

Touring the ID

Warmer weather accompanied a great group from Northeastern University and its Center for Research Innovation.  They wanted to see what all the hubbub is about, and boy were they in for a treat.

Scott from MassChallenge shared his love for Northeastern co-op students, AND the amazing eco-system at 1 Marina Park Drive.  We left convinced that if you’re a startup, do yourself a favor, and apply to MassChallenge.  It’s the best school for startups…how neat is that?

Gazelle (Thanks, Kimberly) convinced us to run home, pull out our retired electronic gadgets, and head to Gazelle.com to figure out how much they’re worth!  Gazelle will pay the value of your gadget and cover shipping costs.  Gazelle can also turn your gadgets into cash for your cause.

Next Step Living, part of a growing cluster of green tech companies, is expanding both in square feet and staff!  Since 2008 Next Step Living has ensured energy efficiency at home.  According to its President and CFO, “our employees love the public transportation options, the facilities work for our trucks, and the clean tech community is strong here.”  We agree.  It is so close to South Station and the Silver Line.  It just plain works.

ID Buffet Style

While you were networking on the Channel on Tuesday night, we were holding it down at the Mayor’s State of the City (State of the Union Boston style) and got to see this awesome video of 2011 in Boston (featuring @vertexPharma@BCECNav, & @GreentownLabs) AND heard the Mayor announce over 100 companies and 3,000 jobs have moved to the District since January 2010.  (See minute 39).

We know parts of us want to go start-up style, have the chance to win part of $1M, and apply to MassChallenge’s 3rd class…so which one of the IDers/future IDers will do it?   We’re saving you time by putting the application questions here!

We wanted to be sure to include the fact that Space with a Soul is officially FULL…until their forthcoming expansion!  (Such a teaser, we know.)

Last but not least, a headsup that you’ll be hearing more and more whisperings of a BIG event…we mean the largest event of its kind on the planet in June in the ID…the International BIO Convention.  Translation = if you’re in biotech, you’ll want dibs, so plan now.
